Outfit Your Home With Smart Solutions
Sunday, March 1, 2009Whether or not you believe in global warming, it's hard not to be aware that summer temperatures have been increasing over the past few years. Coupled with energy prices that seem to be rising even faster, heat is costing many homeowners a lot of money. Some choose to grin and bear it, but others are finding the expense of cooling their homes is just too much to ignore. Besides moving to Alaska (not that there's anything wrong with moving to Alaska), what's a cost-conscious person to do? Dampen the bed sheets at night, like they did before electricity? Fortunately, there have been several advances since those times, and there are real ways other than traditional, wasteful air conditioning to stay comfortable. Here are but a few of them. To begin, the first thing you should do is examine the windows in your house. Pay specific attention to any windows that are facing toward the west. Think about covering any windows that are facing west with heavy-weight curtains or those special blinds that are made to keep out heat. Check your community home improvement store for these things. In the evening, you can open the shades and enjoy the landscaping. Consider opening the windows as well. This can make cross ventilation that will make your home comfortable enough to sleep in with no air conditioning. Any where that you have French doors that open up into a porch, an awning should be installed. This provides shade as well as aid in keeping your home cool. If you are still too hot to comfortably sleep, then your next choice is to use a fan. Though fans do use some energy, it is a lot less money than the air conditioner. Another option is to have Low-E windows installed. These windows really do pay for themselves over time. Whole-house attic fans are another great way to cool down a home. In some sectors of the country, you must use your air conditioner. When using the air conditioner is needed, make sure that you are using it the most effective way possible. Be sure to check and make sure that appliances that cause heat (like a TV or lamp) are not around your thermostat. This helps make sure that your thermostat isn't making the mistake of thinking that the house is hotter than it is in reality. A low energy air conditioning system is another power saver if you can manage the funds to make this happen. If you are getting a new air conditioner, decide on the size cautiously. You don't want to get too big of a unit. Although a big air conditioner will cool a room very fast, it can also leave your room feeling clammy because it won't deal with the humidity as well. A larger unit will also cost you more money. If you are interested in a new home, maybe one that has efficient air conditioning, be sure to look at the homes for sale in Ahwatukee and the Alta Mesa homes for sale. These homes come in many different sizes and styles. These is something for every taste and every budget.
